NZ's largest Crater Lake town of Taupo situated in the volcanic & thermal Central Plateau Region, North Island, New Zealand, plays host to Taupo Tennis.

Taupo Nui-a-tia Lawn Tennis Club was incorporated in 1924. Taupo Nui-a-tia earned its name when the Great Priest Ngatoroirangi, Chief Tia and their people settled in the Bay of Plenty. Chief Tia set off to explore and when reaching the eastern side of Taupo he noticed a rock formation with a likeness to that of his heavy cloak (or "taupo"). After draping his cloak over a post he proclaimed the area Taupo nui-a-Tia ("the great cloak of Tia").
| Eighty years on, the club is now simply known as "Taupo Tennis". |
The tennis club itself is situated in the Tongariro Domain, a reserve just metres from the Lake and directly opposite Taupo's Central Business District. The reserve, framed by the three majestic volcanic peaks of Mt Ruapehu, Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Tongariro, is the major site for some of the town's prestigious sporting events. |
The club is a non-profit sporting organisation, run by a volunteer committee, and is affiliated to the Waikato-Bays region of Tennis NZ. Throughout the season we cater for all age groups and playing levels with a heavy schedule of club days, championships and open tournaments, business house & singles leagues, and family fun tournaments. Courts are available for hire on a casual basis. |
A qualified tennis coach coordinates all junior coaching and is also available for private individual or group lessons for players of all levels.
