Brief History
The Tennis club has a long and rich history in the Taupo District. Being sited originally in the late 1940's and early 50's in Horomatangi St on the present Whitcoulls retail site.
In the late 50's the club was relocated to the Tongariro Domain and then re-sited elsewhere on the same Domain in 1994 where it stands today. It has a long and proud connection with the town centre and Tongariro Domain giving the area life and vibrancy.
However the club lease has now expired and we are in negotiations with the Taupo District Council as to renewal or relocation options. The lease will continue to operate on a month by month basis until a resolve has been reached.
ITF Tournament
In January 2006 Taupo Tennis hosted their first ever Womens' $10,000 prizemoney International Tennis Federation tournament. It was a huge undertaking for a club of our stature, and by far our biggest accomplishment to date. The tournament sponsored by Locheagles attracted players ranked inside the top 500 from all around the world. Our club was represented by our then, local junior star, Kelly Woolacott who received a wild card into the event.
The club rallied terrifically, a huge number of volunteers pulled together, and the facilities transformed. The tournament turned out to be an emphatic success, not only in inspiring the juniors, many of who were terrific volunteer ball kids, or in bringing international tennis to a local level, but also by the comments of the players themselves, expressing that this was the best $10k event thay had played on the tour!
